Kitty had just opened her eyes the following morning when there was a tap on her door and Alice arrived bearing the morning tea tray.

‘Morning, Miss Kitty. The weather has turned today, proper miserable it is out there,’ the maid announced morosely as she deposited the tray on Kitty’s bedside table, before whisking the curtains open to let in the pallid morning light.

Kitty sat up and straightened her bed covers while Alice poured them both a cup of tea, before perching herself on the edge of Kitty’s bed.

‘I heard all about the kerfuffle yesterday with that there necklace, miss. They say as it weren’t the real diamonds after all?’ The girl’s eyes were wide as she peered over the brim of her cup.

‘No, it seems someone made a copy of the Firestone necklace and substituted it for the real thing. Sir Montague only noticed at the last minute as they were about to leave.’ Kitty assumed either Mary or Dolly had told Alice all about the events of yesterday.

‘That must have taken some planning,’ Alice said in a thoughtful tone. ‘Not exactly something done on the fly.’

‘I agree. Inspector Pinch is making some enquiries at the jewellers in Exeter. They had the necklace for cleaning just before Sir Montague came away.’ Kitty stirred her tea and settled back against her pillows.

‘I don’t suppose he’ll find much out. In the film I saw the other week the gang made impressions of the jewels in clay and then had some dodgy place make up the fake. It would only take a few minutes to get the impressions. The innocent people were none the wiser. At least that was what I saw in the cinema when I went with Robert Potter.’

Kitty knew her friend was very fond of the movies. ‘I expect you’re right, Alice. I suppose the Firestone necklace is long gone. The centre stone was very valuable. The other thing the inspector told me was that Esther Hammett is back in Exeter.’

Alarm spread across her friend’s face. ‘Then you keep well away from there, Miss Kitty.’

‘I shall, Alice, have no fear of that.’ Kitty gave a small shudder.

Her friend looked relieved at the reassurance. ‘Have they caught whoever killed that German man yet, miss?’ Alice asked as she topped up Kitty’s teacup with the last of the tea from the small chrome pot.

‘No, not yet. It’s a most peculiar affair. Matt and I intend to talk to the crew of the paddle steamer again today. There must be something that we’ve missed that will shed light on it,’ Kitty said.

‘Well, the captain has a good reputation in the town. He attends the Methodist Hall and he doesn’t touch the drink, which as you know for a sailor is an uncommon thing. Everyone reckons him to be a very honest bloke,’ Alice said before she finished her tea.

‘There was another crewman on the night of Serafina’s party. He left the boat when it moored. I think he worked in the engine room,’ Kitty said.
